Everything happens during the Second World War. The main character of the film is a young woman named Grace. Her husband went to the front, and she was left alone with her three children. The kids have a very strange disease. They don't tolerate sunlight well, so Grace's house is always dark. Fate forces a woman to move from her home to a small mansion on an island off the British coast. Grace immediately begins to settle into her new place according to her own rules. She drapes all the windows with thick dark curtains. According to the internal regulations, all doors must always be closed. And children can only go outside when it's dark.<br />

Grace introduces her new staff to these rules first. These people are strange. They got into the mansion by accident. The fact is that the old servants, who had known Grace and her rules for a long time, suddenly disappeared somewhere. And the woman had no choice but to hire new employees. But these people, as already mentioned, began to behave strangely. Grace is increasingly faced with the fact that from time to time doors begin to open in the house and curtains come off. The servants, however, assure me that it will be better this way. They quarrel with the hostess more and more often. And then they even said that they had been in this mansion for a long time. But Grace and the kids are just guests here.<br />
